FVSU receives renewal funding from the USDA 1890 Facilities Grant Program

Fort Valley State University recently received grant renewal funds totaling $1,004,446 to improve infrastructure in the College of Agriculture, Family Sciences and Technology.

Through a press release issued on Aug. 29, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced renewal funding for the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) 1890 Facilities Grant Program.

The 1890 Facilities Grant Program provides funding towards the improvement of agricultural and food sciences research facilities and equipment. FVSU, the 1890 Land Grant University in Georgia, is one of 19 historically black colleges and universities designated by Congress to provide research based education in the areas of agriculture and human development to underserved audiences through outreach programming.  The USDA provided monies to each 1890 Land Grant institution with funds totaling $18.9 million.

Dr. Govind Kannan, dean of FVSU's College of Agriculture and principal investigator of this 1890 grant, said FVSU received the first set of grant funds for the current five-year project in 2013.

"With the support of this grant program, we completed several construction projects over the years that tremendously enhanced our research, Extension and teaching programs in several agriculture related disciplines. The Stallworth Biotechnology Addition and the Family and Child Development Center are great examples of our recent projects and ones that demonstrate the success of the funding program," Kannan said.

In addition, Kannan also mentioned some projects to unfold with the 2016 renewal funds.

"Funding allocated to FVSU for this year will go towards establishing an animal and food science complex by renovating and expanding the existing Meat Technology Building," Kannan said.

With this funding the university would be able to provide top-notch facilities to train students, preparing them to be leaders in agricultural and food sciences professions as well as provide adequate facilities to train farmers and producers.

The 1890's Facilities Grant is a continuous effort of the USDA to support the future of agriculture and support the 1890 Land Grant Universities. For more information visit, http://ow.ly/ca7k303QOLH
