Alabama State University News October 7, 2014 Patti LaBelle to Perform at ASU to Honor 50th Anniversary of Historic March Alabama State University President Gwendolyn E. Boyd, Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange and Montgomery County Commission Chairman Elton Dean Sr. announced today in a joint news conference that world-famous singer Patti LaBelle will be in concert at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome on March 7 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery March. The commemorative concert is sponsored by ASU, the City of Montgomery and the Montgomery County Commission. "This is going to be a wonderful family affair, a huge grand and glorious celebration that the entire public is invited to attend," Boyd said. "We want to honor and commemorate the anniversary of this important moment that is significant to Montgomery and to the greater community." The partnership between ASU, the City of Montgomery and the Montgomery County Commission was formally announced on March 25, 2014, on the steps of the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church, as a way for the entire community to come together to commemorate and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the historic event. The celebration is open to all groups and participants who wish to honor and support the ideals proclaimed by those who marched in 1965 - freedom, voting rights, inclusiveness and equal justice under the law. Details will be forthcoming soon about how members of the ASU family and the public may purchase tickets to attend the Patti LaBelle concert. "This is going to be a wonderful gala right here on the campus of ASU," Strange said. "We really want to reach out and celebrate all of the foot soldiers and unsung heroes, because it was that group that brings us here today." Unsung Heroes of the March to be Honored As special guests of honor at the concert, all of the original living "unsung heroes" of the 1965 Selma to Montgomery March who can be identified and verified, are invited to attend.
