Tuskegee University News September 29, 2011 President Rochon announces new appointment TUSKEGEE, Ala. Tuskegee University President Gilbert L. Rochon has announced several new appointments within the university's staff. Among them are changes in federal and state affairs. Virgil E. Ecton has been appointed vice president for federal affairs. He will perform his duties in the university's Washington, D.C., office. Ecton is the former vice president for university advancement at Howard University. He steered The Campaign for Howard - the most ambitious fundraising endeavor in the history of the university to a successful conclusion, exceeding its $250 million goal by $25 million. Prior to his appointment at Howard, Ecton worked for the United Negro College Fund for three decades. As the senior executive vice president of development, he raised more than $1.6 billion during his tenure. Ecton's board memberships include: the Association of Fundraising Professionals, where he served as vice chair for nearly 10 years; the executive board of Boy Scouts of America (National Capital Area); and chair of the Howard University Alumni Board. Ecton received a Bachelor of Science degree from Indiana University and a Master of Education degree from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. In addition, he completed the Advanced Management Program at the Harvard University Business School in Boston, Mass. Darryl E. Crompton, Esq. has been appointed general counsel and vice president for legal affairs. His most recent position titles were vice president for government affairs and university counsel at Tuskegee. Crompton received his law degree from the University of California-Davis; Master of Public Health degree in health services administration from the Yale University School of Medicine, Dept. of Epidemiology and Public Health; and Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from the University of California, Los Angeles. He was admitted to the Alabama State Bar in December 1981. Crompton has over 35 years of experience as a professor, lawyer, public health expert and administrator in higher education, for-profit and non-profit sectors. Tamara Young Lee has been appointed associate vice president for state and regional government affairs. She most recently served as assistant vice president for government affairs and assistant university counsel. Lee has more than 20 years of legal experience at the state and federal levels. From 2006 to 2010, she served as vice president of business development at Small Business Capital in Montgomery, Ala. She served as executive director and general counsel for Southern Development Council Inc. in Montgomery, from 1993 to 2006. She is also a registered state lobbyist in Alabama. Lee received her law degree in 1984 from North Carolina Central University School of Law and a B.S. in music education from the University of Alabama-Tuscaloosa in 1981. Willa Hall Smith, an alumna of Tuskegee University ('71), has been appointed regional director of major gifts. She most recently served as associate vice president for federal relations for the university. She performs her duties in the university's Washington, D.C., office. Smith served as class agent for university's Founder's Day activities this spring, raising over $100,000. She also secured the bond for one of the newest buildings on Tuskegee's campus, Margaret Murray Washington Hall. SANDRA M.
