Dr. Cheryl Easley Welcomed as New Health Sciences Dean

The new dean of ASU's College of Health Sciences got a warm welcome to Hornet Nation during a reception held in her honor Tuesday, August 9.

The Alabama State University family welcomed Dr. Cheryl Easley as the new dean of the College of Health Sciences (COHS) during a reception held in the John Garrick Hardy Student Center on August 9.

"We are honored and delighted that she chose us," said President Gwendolyn  E. Boyd. "She is now an official member of Hornet Nation."
Easley holds both the Ph.D. and R.N. degrees. She is nationally recognized as a public health nursing specialist and for her work in  higher education.

Easley served as dean and professor of the College of Health and Social Welfare at the University of Alaska-Anchorage (UAA) from 2003 to 2011. She received her undergraduate degree in nursing from Columbia Union College in Takoma Park, Maryland, and both of her graduate degrees in nursing from New York University. Prior to her tenure at UAA, she held administrative and teaching positions at Saginaw Valley State University, Rush Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center and Rush University, the University of Illinois at Chicago, the University of Michigan, Andrews University and Herbert H. Lehman College of the City University of New York. Some of her current interests include the intersection of health and human rights and healthcare for the underserved.

"We are very excited to have Dr. Easley join us because we all know that Alabama State University is on the move. With the transformational leadership that Dr. Easley will bring to the College of Health Sciences, we know that the best is truly yet to come," Boyd added. "We not only are excited about the credentials that she brings with her, but we also are excited about the heart that she brings to the work that she will be doing in the College of Health Sciences, helping us to mold our students into future leaders in the various fields of Health Sciences."

The reception was attended by members of the University's Administrative Council, deans of other colleges, COHS staff and faculty, and other campus representatives, as well as Easley's twin sister, Dr. Carol Easley Allen, and her brother-in-law, Dr. Gregory Allen.

"I have been very impressed with the college and with the University since I have been here," said Easley. "We have wonderful programs and wonderful students. I hope that at the end of my time here, the college is really stronger and that it will be ready for the next dean to then take it to the next level of excellence."

Easley has a laudable record of public service and leadership.

She served as the president of the American Public Health Association from 2008 to 2009. She has been a speaker at state, national and international gatherings, including the American Public Health Association, the World Public Health Congress and the National Association for Home Care. She has written in the areas of health and human rights, terrorism, cultural competency, prison health, slavery and human trafficking, and social injustice. She is an active member of the American Public Health Association, having served as chair of the education board, co-chair of the joint policy committee and member of the international human rights committee and the executive board.

"Dr. Easley brings to us a wealth of experience, exposure and the necessary credentials to move this college several steps higher," said Dr. Leon Wilson, ASU's provost and vice president of Academic Affairs.
