Summary: 2023 HBCU Library Alliance Deans and Directors Leadership Meeting

Greetings Colleagues,

Below is a brief summary of the sessions presented during the 2023 HBCU Library Alliance Deans and Directors Leadership Meeting hosted by Hampton University (VA) Thursday, July 6-7, 2023. Presenter contact information is provided.

Building Capacity for Humanities Special Collections at HBCUs

Lee Price, Director of Development, Conservation Center for Art & Historic Artifacts (CCAHA) (PA) presented on the NEH-funded Building Capacity for Humanities Special Collections at HBCUs project. The presentation covered work completed to date and challenges faced, as well as opening the floor to a discussion of how the HBCU Library Alliance can build upon this program in the future. Currently, 23 projects at 12 institutions have been approved. This round of programming is anticipated to be completed by summer 2024.

In discussion that followed the presentation, there was widespread agreement that future assistance is needed with: On-site hands-on training, long-term digital preservation guidance, improving environmental conditions in collection areas, and archivist assistance in cataloging and processing.

Sandra Phoenix, Executive Director, HBCU Library Alliance (GA) provided updates on the Alliance's programs including Building Capacity for Humanities Special Collections at HBCUs, Summer Conservation Preservation Internship Project, multiple CLIR Projects, the Brown University Leadership Pilot, and the Smithsonian-Mason Graduate Certificate in Digital Publishing Humanities. Kimberley Bugg, Ph.D., Associate Library Director, AUC Library (GA) presented suggested amendments to the Alliance's Bylaws. She discussed the process that the Bylaws Task Force used to compile the suggestions and she encouraged additional suggestions to amend the Bylaws. Collaborative Partnerships

The collaborative partnerships session was led by Faye Watkins, Dean of University Libraries, Florida A&M University, Linda Simmons-Henry, Dean of Library and Archives, Texas College and Vicki Coleman, Dean of Library Services, North Carolina A&T State University.

Their discussion topics included networking to advance university research and strategies to leverage collaboration and partnerships.

Recruitment and Leadership Training
The recruitment and leadership training session was led by HBCU Library Alliance Board Chair Adrienne Webber, Dean, University Digital Library, Grambling State University (LA) and Ondrea Murphy, Ph.D., Executive Director for Library Services, Delaware State University.

The team discussed being crafty in the design and development of recruitment materials, the value of mentoring staff and students in the library field and the importance of the library programs at North Carolina Central University.

Student Success
Wanda Brown, Director of Library Services, Winston Salem State University (NC) presented the session on Student Success. She encouraged attendees to invest in the assistant directors and department heads that work with the deans and directors. In her role as Library Director, Wanda encourages students to consider librarianship regardless of their field of study. She discussed the importance of teaching students good work ethics, as well as the value of the library as a place for students to collaborate.
