Allen University News August 26, 2019 Professor, Attorney Nancy Rhoads Endows Scholarship for Aspiring Lawyers Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice Nancy Rhoads presented Allen University with $25,000 toward her endowed scholarship, which will total $125,000 after five years. The Rhoads Law School Pipeline Scholarship assists current Allen University students with their educational expenses. The scholarship will be awarded annually to students who express interest in pursuing a career in law. Rhoads created the scholarship in honor of her late husband, Bob, who was a lawyer and died in 2018 after suffering from pancreatic cancer. Rhoads' husband gave her the idea to start the scholarship after she began working at the university, and they started the scholarship before his death. "I think my late husband Bob knew how happy I was working at Allen, and frankly, it kind of saved my life too, because caring for someone through a long slow cancer death is difficult. I would come over here and forget. It was wonderful for me," said Rhoads. Desmond Rowe, a senior majoring in social science, was chosen as the 2019 recipient of the scholarship. Rowe, who travels two hours to attend Allen University each day with his twin sister, resides in Edgefield, SC. This summer, the 4.0 GPA honors student was named a 2019 White House HBCU Competitiveness Scholar by the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The scholars program - the initiative's highest student recognition - selects students based on their academic achievement, campus and civic involvement and entrepreneurial aspirations. "Some people don't pursue their goals and dreams because of financial burdens. This scholarship will provide support for one less thing I have to worry about, and now I can focus more on studying and preparing for the LSAT so I can get accepted into law school," said Rowe. Recipients are awarded $20,000 of which $5,000 is applied toward each of the three years while the scholar attends law school at the University of South Carolina. The remaining $5,000 covers the cost of preparation for the LSAT entrance exam as well as pays for the cost of the exam. "We appreciate the kindness and generosity of Nancy Rhoads and her late husband. Their forethought in providing an endowed scholarship ensures that Allen University students who aspire to further public good with a career in law will have financial assistance to support their dreams," said Dr. Ernest McNealey, president and CEO. This marks the second year that the scholarship has been awarded to an Allen student. Rhoads presented her first $25,000 check during the 2018-2019 academic year. It was awarded to inaugural recipient, Noluthando Ntsangani '19, who earned a Bachelor of Science in social science with a concentration in pre-law. Ntsangani, a native of Port Elizabeth, South Africa, is currently awaiting her LSAT scores.
