Fisk University Receives Approval to Offer Bachelors of Science in Data Science Beginning Spring 2020

Fisk University recently received approval from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACSCOC) to offer an Undergraduate degree program in Data Science (BS). The new program will launch in the spring of 2020. Data science is a multi-disciplinary field that uses scientific methods, processes, algorithms and systems to extract knowledge and insights from structured and unstructured data. "This program will open new doors for graduates of the university," said the new program director Sajid Hussain, Ph.D.

In addition, to this development the University's Board of Trustees approved new degree offerings in Criminal Justice (BA), Homeland Security (BA), Bioinformatics (BA), and Social Justice (AA). The Homeland Security program will be the only one of its kind offered in the state of Tennessee and the third such program on an HBCU campus. The Social Justice program is designed to be a component of a proposed Social Justice Institute, which will rekindle Fisk University's long history of enhancing race relations in the nation. in addition to this development, the University also has made application to launch its first online degree program in Elected Studies (BA) - Human Development concentration. All programs are pending approval by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

"When fully operational the proposed center will house degree programs at the associates, baccalaureate, and graduate levels," said Vann Newkirk, Ph.D., provost and vice president for academic affairs. To stay updated on the status of these programs visit Fisk.edu.
