HU Black Family Conference to dispel myths that are culpable for minority underrepresentation in STEM
Hampton, VA - Are you intimidated by the thought of pursuing a career in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)? Can scientists and artists ever find common ground? How secure are we in cyberspace? To find answers to these questions and more, come join us at the 38th Annual Conference on the Black Family at Hampton University.
This year the Conference on the Black Family is hosted by the HU School of Science on March 16-18. The conference theme is, "Full S.T.E.A.M. Ahead: Healthy Minds and Bodies, Securing Our Future." The opening session will take place on Wednesday, March 16 at 7 p.m. in Ogden Hall and the keynote address will be given by Dr. Luther Williams, former assistant director of Education and Human Resources, National Science Foundation.  The Jenkins family of Richmond, VA will also be recognized as the Honored Black Family at the opening session.
"At this year's Conference, we want to engage in meaningful conversations and activities that will empower your family," said Dr. Michele Claville, school of science assistant dean and conference chairperson. "Our speakers and panelists will help dispel myths that are culpable for underrepresentation in STEM fields, show the connection between the Arts and the Sciences through music, and be safe in cyberspace."
Since 1978, Hampton University's Conference on the Black Family has created a forum for prevalent issues concerning the black family. HU President Dr. William R. Harvey saw a need for consistent dialogue in the African-American community and initiated the conference to fill the void.
"Since this year's Conference will be held in conjunction with the School of Science's 21st Annual Research Symposium, it promises to be exciting and informative" said Claville. "This is one Conference that will benefit all members of the family, and our community. "
Event sessions and registration information are listed below.
The cost for registration prior to March 12, 2016 is $45 for the general public; and $20 for military and seniors. March 12, 2016 to March 16, 2016, registration is $65 for the general public; and $40 for military and seniors.
