Alabama A&M president discusses future after first year on job
HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - It has been just over a year since Dr. Andrew Hugine was appointed president of Alabama A&M University.
He sat down with WAFF 48 News Thursday to talk about what he's done and what's in store for the university's future.
One of his biggest plans is changing the organizational structure of the school, from five schools to four colleges within the university.
Hugine said he's doing this because so many courses of study take from several different disciplines.
He said the new structure will improve those interdisciplinary relationships.
He said he's aiming to market the university better, both locally and globally and grow enrollment to about 7,000 students.
Improving community relations, amid several violent incidents involving A&M students, is also at the top of Hugine's agenda.
"We're putting in call boxes, in our budget we've asked and it's been approved to employ a few more officers, give them some better equipment," he said. "So we are constantly looking at ways that we can enhance the safety on our campus, but the bottom line is this is a safe campus."
A&M's Board of Trustees will meet Friday at 10 a.m.
The trustees will discuss the issue of the university being able to take out a line of credit if needed, and give their one year evaluation of Dr. Hugine.
