Trenholm State Awarded $1.5 Million Grant From U.S. Department of Education

The U.S. Department of Education has awarded a $1.5 million grant to the Upward Bound Program at H. Councill Trenholm State Technical College. Upward Bound provides essential support to currently enrolled 9th and 10th graders in their preparation for college entrance. It provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their precollege performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. Upward Bound serves high school students from low income families and students from families in which neither parents holds a bachelor's degree. "Upward Bound is one of eight TRIO programs funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The program is funded through a competitive grant process, and I'm proud to announce that our proposal received a perfect score of 110 points, including a 10-point priority question. This year we will partner with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System in utilizing our greenhouse to operate a hydroponics and entrepreneurship program for our students," said Sam Munnerlyn, President of Trenholm State.

Students enrolled in Upward Bound are provided academic instruction in math, science, literature, composition and Spanish. Tutoring, life skills, counseling, cultural enrichment, mentoring, career orientation, college assistance, graduation exam and ACT preparation services are provided to improve the financial and economic literacy of students. Eligible students preparing to enter their sophomore, junior and senior years are required to participate in a six week summer program at Trenholm State. Participation is free, and the targeted schools are: Prattville High in Autauga County; Wetumpka High in Elmore County; Calhoun High in Lowndes County; Carver, Jeff Davis, Lanier and Lee High in Montgomery County. For more information, please contact Geneva Patterson, Director of Upward Bound at 334-420-4340.
