Lincoln University Pays Tribute To Founders
Jefferson City, MO- Lincoln University will celebrate the founders of the institution on Thursday, February 10, during the Founders' Day Convocation, scheduled for 11 a.m. in the Richardson Fine Arts Center- Robert and Charlene Mitchell Auditorium. Dr. Debra
Greene, Department Head of History, Political Science and Philosophy, will deliver the keynote address.
In addition to the tribute to the founders, the university will also recognize alumni, faculty and staff for their commitment to the university. The Allen Family, from St. Louis, Missouri, will be honored as the 2011 Family of the Year. Seven employees will
receive recognition for 25 years of service to the university, while 16 additional individuals will be acknowledged as they prepare to retire.
Lincoln University was founded in 1866 by the enlisted men and officers of the 62nd and 65th Colored Infantry Regiments. While serving on the battlefields of Texas near the close of the Civil War, the men, who were taught to read and write by their White officers, envisioned a school that would allow other freed African Americans the opportunity to learn. Lincoln Institute was first organized on January 14, 1866, and opened with just two students enrolled on September 17 of that same year. The Founders Day tradition was started in 1921, making this the 90th anniversary of the annual celebration. This year also marks the 145th anniversary of the founding of Lincoln University.
