Sustainability - Post-Grant Leadership Program

The Board discussed a post-grant leadership program funded by corporate/individual/vendor contributions.  Dr. Joseph Silver met recently with members of the Executive Committee to strategize a plan.  Board discussions included hosting the leadership program at an HBCU or in conjunction with the Alliance's membership meeting.  The face-to-face program would also include a number of web-based activities.  Participants would be required to pay a registration fee and travel expenses. Hosting in conjunction with the membership meeting may be more attractive/inviting to the corporate/vendor community.

Expanding Library Support for Faculty Research in HBCUs

The formal award letter has been received from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.  The eighteen-month project will assess and strengthen library service in support of faculty research at HBCUs and involves a partnership with the HBCU Faculty Development Network.  An implementation planning meeting was held at LYRASIS to begin grant activities.  First steps include surveying librarians to determine their current services, capacity and needs regarding faculty research support. A Library Advisory Committee will be appointed to provide expertise and assist in survey design and testing.

Photographic Preservation Project

Work at each of the demonstration projects ended September 30, 2013. A concept paper for a new round of funding has been forwarded to the Mellon Foundation for review. Project participant Bethune-Cookman has begun an internship program for History majors inspired in part by the internships in their demonstration project. Bethune-Cookman is seeking an IMLS grant that would provide training support for the internships.

Membership Dues

As of October 30 2013, forty-seven members have remitted $45,570.00. This is behind the October 30, 2012 remittance of sixty-one members.

Decade of Investment Fundraiser

This is a component of the Alliance's 2012-2015 fundraising plan, "The One Hundred Plan."  Fundraising Committee Chair Mary Jo Fayoyin has forwarded communication to those who contributed in FY 13 and received several responses.

Leadership IV Cohort Fundraiser

Designer tees/polos embroidered with the Alliance's logo on the front and list of institutions on the back are available for sale on the web-site.

Wayne State University Increasing Library Diversity

The Alliance is partnering with Wayne State University (MI) on a 2013 Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Grant for "Increasing Leadership Diversity." The Alliance's role includes assisting in the recruitment of qualified applicants, mentors and a mentor consultant. Recruitment efforts will be extended to undergraduates currently attending HBCU institutions and library paraprofessionals currently employed by HBCU libraries. Ten mentors and a mentor consultant have been recruited.

Mission/Vision Statement and Slogan

With feedback from members, the new draft statements are:

Mission:  The HBCU Library Alliance serves to strengthen its member libraries through leadership development, archives preservation and strategic planning and assessment.

Vision: The HBCU Library Alliance will advance the missions of the White House-designated Historically Black Colleges and their libraries by providing leadership training, services and resources.

Slogan: Preserving the Past: Transforming for Tomorrow

The Board will provide additional feedback to the committee, particularly around the vision statement.

CEU's for Webinars

The Board discussed CEU's for classes as an enhancement to the offerings.  Pauletta Bracy has researched NCCU's criteria and will assist in the application process.
