Harris-Stowe Professor Receives Tenure Appointment

ST. LOUIS, MO (October 1, 2013) - Dr. Jayashree Balakrishna was recently
granted tenure and named a full professor of physics by the Harris-Stowe
State University Board of Regents. An HSSU faculty member since 1999,
Dr. Balakrishna provided leadership in the development of Harris-Stowe's
biology degree and urban ecology minor.

Dr. Balakrishna has a number of noteworthy accomplishments as an
academician, including being published in the Geophysical Journal
International and the Physical Review. She has presented research at the
University of Mississippi at Oxford and served as a judge at the
Emerging Researcher Conference in Atlanta, Ga., which was sponsored by
the National Science Foundation and the American Association for the
Advancement of Science. Additionally, she is a research mentor to HSSU
science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) students and instructs
each summer for the university's Science and Math Academy, which is also
funded by the NSF.

Dr. Balakrishna earned her Ph.D. in physics from Washington University
in St. Louis. Far beyond her work day, she can often be found mentoring
students and continues to be dedicated to the overall mission of
Harris-Stowe. The entire HSSU family congratulates Dr. Balakrishna on
being named a tenured professor and on her long-standing commitment to
its students and their academic success.
