ASU's Rehabilitation Counseling Program Receives New Accreditation

Alabama State University's Rehabilitation Counseling program in the College of Health Sciences has received accreditation from the Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE).

Alabama State University's Master of Rehabilitation Counseling Program is now an accredited program. The program, which is offered in the College of Health Sciences, received notification on July 25 from the Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE) that it is accredited through the summer of 2015.

In order to receive accreditation, the department had to show that it met and supported CORE standards, which involved developing a self-study document that included program mission and objectives, program evaluation, general curriculum requirements, knowledge domains and student learning outcomes; a clinical experience program; and administration and faculty program support and resources.

Dr. Steven Chesbro, dean of the College of Health Sciences, said the University received the accreditation because of successful teamwork within the department.

"This accreditation affirmation speaks to the quality of the rehabilitation counseling program at Alabama State University. Faculty, staff and students in the program worked diligently to achieve the accreditation, and we are very proud that their hard work paid off," Chesbro said.

Dr. Dothel Edwards Jr., chair of the Department of Rehabilitation Studies and program coordinator of ASU's Master of Rehabilitation Counseling, said the team started working on receiving accreditation in May 2009.

"It was important for us to receive the CORE accreditation because accreditation provides additional program credibility for students who wish to continue their education by obtaining a doctorate degree. Also, CORE accreditation will allow graduates to sit for the Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) examination prior to graduation," Edwards said.

Rehabilitation counseling is a systematic process which assists persons with physical, developmental, cognitive and emotional disabilities to achieve their personal, career and independent living goals in the most integrated setting possible.
