SC State American Nuclear Society Chapter Awarded Grant to Host James Allen Anderson Seminar Series

The American Nuclear Society (ANS) - South Carolina State University Student Session (ANS-SCSU) was awarded a $1500 grant to support the James Allen Anderson Seminar Series. The funding was awarded by the ANS Nuclear Engineering Education for the Disadvantaged (NEED) committee.

“This is definitely a boost for the ANS-SCSU student chapter. It is not easy for a student organization to receive external support. I would like to thank all the students who worked on the proposal,” said Sihan Chang, president of the ANS-SCSU chapter.

The seminar series, for which the grant will support, is named after Dr. James Allen Anderson, who contributed significantly in the establishment of the nuclear engineering program at SC State, the first undergraduate nuclear engineering program at a historically black college/university.

North Carolina State University’s Dr. Michael Doster, professor of nuclear engineering and the recipient of 2016 Glenn Murphy Award, has been named the speaker for the seminar. He will give a talk on “Coupling of Thermal Energy Storage with Small Modular Reactors” on Wednesday, Oct. 26 in the auditorium of the Engineering and Computer Science Complex from 12-1 p.m. Details of the seminar can be found here.

The ANS is a not-for-profit, international, scientific and educational organization. The purpose of ANS is to promote the awareness and understanding with regard to the application of nuclear science and technology. Among student sessions in American Nuclear Society, SC State’s student chapter is the only student session at an HBCU.

The NEED committee provides educational and professional assistance to the culturally and economically disadvantaged in order to encourage their educational pursuits in nuclear science and technology.

“I hope we can get continuous funding from the NEED committee for this event, then we can invite more top-notch nuclear researchers to the campus and offer seminars to our students. It will help produce more engineers who are highly skilled, competent and well prepared in the fields of nuclear and radiological engineering.” Dr. Zaijing Sun, the advisor of ANS-SCSU said.
