AUC Robert W. Woodruff Library and Shepley Bulfinch Receive IIDA Design Award
The Atlanta University Center Robert W. Woodruff Library and Shepley Bulfinch, a Boston-based architectural firm, won the "Single Space" category in the 2012 Library Interior Design Competition for the Learning Commons. The biennial design award is jointly sponsored by the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) and the American Library Association (ALA).
"We're excited about this award as it endorses our concept of a flexible and attractive space and one that is owned by the students and faculty of the Atlanta University Center," said Loretta Parham, CEO and Library Director. "Shepley Bulfinch did an exceptional job in creating a dynamic environment in the phase one renovation of our Library, as did project managers Silverman Construction Program Management and the construction team Turner Construction Special Projects. The value in their work is recognized every day when we see how much our patrons enjoy the Learning Commons area."
"This is a real honor for a transformational work," said interior designer and Shepley Bulfinch director Joe Rondinelli. "The limitations in an interior renovation project can stimulate creativity. For Woodruff, we embraced the red accent color of the original architectural window trim as a major color driver within. What was originally a fairly timid and dated gesture was amplified on the interior with bold intentional gestures, providing a powerful backdrop for the library's teaching and learning environment."
Commenting on the award winners, competition judge Felice Silverman said, "The overall quality of the submissions was at the highest level... The designers were faced with new functional and technological challenges and responded with creativity and innovation."
The 2010 interior renovation transformed an existing 1980s library into a dynamic gathering place and center of teaching, learning, and scholarship for the communities of the Atlanta University Center's four constituent Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Central to Shepley Bulfinch's design response was the creation of a learning commons to span from the main entrance to the central stair. This now serves as the library's welcoming 'front door' and provides primary services and a variety of settings for learning, working, and collaborating.
The design challenges included creating an entry sequence to orient patrons and highlight services; establishing a sense of identity visible from the exterior; and providing a flexible extended-hours access for part of the learning commons. The original marble entry stairs, which were meant to convey a sense of grandeur to visitors, were re-envisioned as a seating area for poetry readings and other small events. They also became a natural demarcation for a portion of the learning commons that could be secured from the rest of the library as an extended-hours space. A glass folding door rises vertically during normal operating hours to act as a canopy helping to reinforce the bleachers and stairs as a gathering place.
