Hampton University News July 24, 2017 Hampton University's Leadership Summit Celebrates First Week-Long Success Known for creating some of the greatest leaders in history, Hampton University believes in early grooming to achieve optimal success. The High School Leadership Summit was designed to do just that by exposing rising high school juniors and seniors to find the "leader within." With students coming as far as California to attend this year's summit, the event was, by all accounts, a success. "This year's event brought the most engaged group of students we have ever had and we were beyond pleased with the outcome," said Director of the William R. Harvey Leadership Institute, Dr. Desiree Williams. According to a survey completed by program participants, this year, 70 percent said they are more than likely to attend Hampton University after graduation. "Everything about Hampton made me like Hampton. The people on campus and those involved with the leadership program made me love this university," said rising senior and program participant, Jonathan Brown. "I liked that the summit was not force-fed. We all got to enjoy each other's time and have fun," said program participant Khai Fisher. "What stood out the most was how open and welcoming Hampton students were with us. We all became friends." What used to be a weekend adventure was expanded this year to a week-long experience. The new itinerary brought a host of fun adventures to the mix, a day trip to the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. Leadership Institute Fellows, who are current Hampton University students enrolled in the leadership program pursuing a minor in leadership studies, served as camp counselors. They also presented thought-provoking breakout sessions to the high school participants. "I continue to be amazed by the intelligence and talent of our students at Hampton University," said Dr. Williams. The summit included a special appearance by Hampton University President Dr. William R. Harvey. Dr. Harvey met with each student one-on-one to learn of their hopes, dreams and desires. The summit ended with a closing brunch ceremony during which high school participants participated in dynamic group presentations. The celebration closed with loud applause when eight student participants were awarded acceptance to Hampton University.
