1879 Institute of Colored Youth Diploma Among Recent Gifts to Cheyney University Archives
On Friday June 8, Christopher John Logan of Medford, NJ, donated an assortment of documents which had belonged to his late uncle Harry Boyer to Cheyney University’s archives. Dr. Lut Nero, dean of Cheyney University’s L. P. Hill Library, University Archivist, Keith Bingham and Interim Director of Institutional Advancement Larry Green, were on hand to receive the box of diplomas and personal papers.
Included among the treasures were Sarah P. Pemberton’s (1879) diploma from the Institute for Colored Youth, a certificate issued to Mrs. Henry Boyer from the Parisian Tailor Academy, 1901, and the certificate issued to his uncle who had been the elevator operator at John Wanamaker’s in downtown Philadelphia as well as photographs and other personal papers.
As the team pored over the manuscripts, Larry Green remarked, “President Vital will be elated to know that a Institute for Colored Youth certificate issued to Sarah P. Pemberton, by Fanny Jackson in 1879 has been gifted to the University. For these documents to arrive during Cheyney University’s 175th anniversary is especially fortuitous. We greatly appreciate this generous gift.” Mr. Bingham plans to exhibit some of the items in the library during the upcoming academic year.
