Edward Waters College News February 5, 2021 Edward Waters College Adds Crucialist® Virtual Care Model to COVID Testing to Enhance Campus Safety Beginning in February, students, faculty and staff of Edward Waters College will have the additional support of Jacksonville-based virtual emergency medicine practice, Crucialist. “We are pleased to make Crucialist available to our students and members of the faculty and staff, as a supplement to our free monthly COVID-19 testing and ongoing campus safety initiative,” said Dr. A. Zachary Faison Jr., president and CEO of Edward Waters College. “Having 24/7 direct access to board-certified emergency medicine doctors can be reassuring for those who are symptomatic or test positive. We recognized that not every student has that kind of medical access, so we worked with Crucialist to provide our students access throughout the semester.” To effectively provide virtual emergency medicine, Crucialist uses board-certified emergency doctors to oversee all care and providers can orchestrate hands-on care when needed. EWC students, faculty and staff will also have access to the Crucialist practice for non-COVID related concerns. The initial cost of the access is being funded through donations. Those wanting to continue their Crucialist membership after this semester can do so for an affordable monthly fee. Founded in 2019, Crucialist are available for virtual care to enrolled members throughout Florida and in 22 states. Being trained in emergency medicine, Crucialist providers help patients evaluate the need for an emergency room visit before they go which is critical during the current pandemic. “COVID has been challenging for anyone with unexpected medical concerns,” said Dr. Chris Hamann, a Crucialist physician. “We help our patients be seen and treated for high-acuity concerns directly or by navigating them to alternative sites of care. This is important because so many are deferring care, which can cause complications down the road.” Crucialist is the sister company to Jacksonville-based emergency medicine specialty practice Crucial Care. Founded in 2007, Crucial Care uses doctors and equipment traditionally found in an emergency room in an alternative setting that creates positive patient experiences while saving time and money. They expanded the model, managing GuideWell Emergency Doctors facilities in Central Florida and now in West Florida, where the first of six new facilities opened January 25 of this year. “Being sick is scary,” added Dr. Dodaro, Crucialist Chief Medical Officer. “By making access to high-acuity care easier, Edward Waters College is helping students and faculty not only be well but feel at ease sooner; and that’s just as important.” Sandra M.
