Winston-Salem State University News May 18, 2017 In Brief: WSSU awarded highest honor for employee giving campaign WSSU has received the highest honor for campaign excellence from the State Employees Combined Campaign (SECC). Chancellor Elwood L. Robinson was presented with the SECC Chairman's Award, which recognizes state departments, agencies and universities that increased donations and participation. In addition, Michelle Cook, vice chancellor for advancement and executive director of the WSSU Foundation, received the Growth in Giving award for the largest increase in dollars raised, and Derek Jeter, chairman of the SECC Committee, received the SECC Leadership Award. The awards were presented on April 17. For WSSU's 2016 campaign, which ran Oct. 21-Nov. 30, faculty and staff donated over $25,000. Almost 18 percent of employees participated. WSSU staffer wins Governor's Volunteer Award Dana Walker, coordinator of community service at Winston-Salem State University, has received the Governor's Volunteer Service Award for his work matching members of the WSSU community with non-profit organizations. Walker coordinates WSSU's Project GIVE [Getting Involved (through) Volunteer Efforts]<https://www.wssu.edu/campus-life/dean-of-students/career-development-services/project-give/default.aspx>, which is hosted through the Office of Career Development Services. In 2015-16 through Project GIVE, 779 students volunteered 29,013 hours to local agencies. This included service learning projects at 22 schools, 15 churches and 14 medical facilities. He also coordinated an annual volunteer service fair that helped students, faculty and staff learn about ways they can serve their community. "His work has led to recognition of Project GIVE as a valuable resource in the greater community and to raise the overall profile of the University," wrote Arthur Hardin, WSSU academic success counselor, in nominating Walker. Hardin was the previous coordinator for Project GIVE. The award was presented on April 19 at Salem College. The Governor's Volunteer Service Award, first created in 1979, honors the true spirit of volunteerism by recognizing individuals, groups and businesses that make a significant contribution to their community through volunteer service. Students support Center for Smart Financial Choices WSSU accounting students learned managerial accounting and business concepts while also supporting The Center for Smart Financial Choices, a non-profit whose mission is "to empower all individuals to achieve financial wellness through all stages of life." The students raised $600 by competing to sell cookies they produced in Dr. Carol Cain's Principles of Managerial Accounting (ACC 2317). The center is located in WSSU's Enterprise Center. WSSU People * Three WSSU Police and and Public Safety officers have been promoted effective April 1. Henry Gray has been promoted from lieutenant to captain, and Ulrick McDougald and Jeremy Neal have been promoted from officers to corporals. Family members, staff and administrators celebrated the officers at a ceremony on Monday, April 17. * Students surprised James Tate, property security guard at the C.G. O'Kelly Library, with the Ordinary Man Award during the Rams Choice Awards on April 19. The awards are through the WSSU Campus Activities Board and recognized him for his dedication to students and to WSSU. * Endia Beal, assistant professor of art and director of the Diggs Gallery at WSSU, was the featured speaker at the 115th annual commencement exercises of Barton College in Wilson, on May 13. * Rosalba Ledezma, associate vice chancellor of facilities management, has been honored by the City of Winston-Salem in its Outstanding Women Leaders Program. Ledezma, who joined WSSU in 2012, was recognized at an event on April 20 at the Embassy Suites in downtown Winston-Salem.
