University of the District of Columbia July 30, 2010 UDC Clears Major Fed Funding Hurdle Bill Could Result in Federal Payment to Historic University A House of Representatives subcommittee has approved the investment of up to $10.75M in new federal funding for the University System of the District of Columbia, which includes the flagship University of the District of Columbia and the Community College of the District of Columbia (CCDC). Among the various measures, a new $10M federal payment for CCDC included in the Financial Services and General Government Appropriations bill would fund the continued expansion of the District’s first public community college. The bill was marked up by an appropriations subcommittee on Thursday evening, with continued action expected when Congress returns from recess. “Our colleagues in Congress know it is critical that the nation’s capital be a model for effective, accessible higher education and this new financial commitment to the University System represents that,” said President Allen L. Sessoms. “Throughout this process, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton and D.C. City Council Chairman Gray have been overwhelmingly supportive of our efforts and we would not be where we are without them.” Dr. Sessoms also thanked Congressman Jose Serrano, who chairs the House Appropriations Subcommittee for his continued support of the measure. Under the Energy and Water Appropriations bill, the University’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences would receive $500,000 to develop a renewable energy institute. This would be carried out in collaboration with the University’s newly approved College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability, and Environmental Sciences. In addition to the $10M for CCDC, the Financial Services bill also included $250,000 in funding to jumpstart the Urban Teacher Residency Academy.
