Shaw University News Etheridge Visits Shaw University, Highlights HBCU Funding Shaw to Receive Nearly $1 Million Raleigh, NC (October 13, 2010) - U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge (D-Lillington) visited students at Shaw university today and toured the campus, highlighting a recent nearly $1 million federal grant awarded to the university. Shaw received funding under the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Institutional Aid Program. "Education means jobs and economic development for North Carolina," said Etheridge. "Shaw University is putting this money to work by investing in the educational tools needed to equip students for success in the 21st century economy." Shaw is using the funds for program administration, strengthening the university's academic and administrative technology infrastructure through the building of additional computer labs, and improving the university's academic climate through renovating, upgrading and improving campus facilities. "This grant will allow us to strengthen our facilities, improve administrative programming and support our existing technology, including building additional computer 'smart labs,'" said Shaw University President Irma McClaurin. "We appreciate Congressman Etheridge's support in obtaining these funds which will continue to enhance our academic and campus environment." The purpose of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Institutional Aid Program is to provide financial assistance to establish or strengthen the academic resources, financial management, endowments and physical plants of Historically Black Colleges and Universities to enhance these institutions. ### Shaw University was founded in 1865 and is the oldest historically black university in the south. Shaw University is a private, co-educational, liberal arts University that awards degrees at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
