Hampton University presents 'Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: The Man Behind the Myth' to help celebrate Black History Month

Hampton University's Dr. William R. and Norma B. Harvey Library along with the School of Liberal Arts and Education's Department of Political Science and History co-sponsor a program in honor of Black History Month:  "Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.:  The Man Behind the Myth," Monday, Feb. 26, 6 p.m. in the Hampton University Student Center Ballroom.

"Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.:  The Man Behind the Myth" is co-sponsored by the Harvey Library's librarian, Tina Rollins and History Professor Robert Watson.

"We are happy to continue to bring engaging speakers to the university to enlighten not only the university but the entire community," Rollins said.

This event commemorates the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. King April 4, 1968.

"I hope that students and people from the community will come and hear about this historic man," Watson said. "This is a great opportunity for both students and the community."

The guest speaker, Dr. Cassandra Newby-Alexander, a lifelong educator with deep family ties to the Hampton Roads areas. Her father, James E. Newby, Jr., was a respected medical doctor and community leader who was appointed to the Norfolk City Planning Commission in 1965 where he was chairman of the capital improvements subcommittee and liaison to the Model Cities program. Both of her brothers followed their father into medicine.

A graduate of Maury High School in Norfolk and the University of Virginia (BA '80), Dr. Newby-Alexander has taught high school and college locally, including Norfolk State University, where she is director of the Joseph Jenkins Roberts Center for African Diaspora Studies. She received her M.A. from Old Dominion University in 1984 and Ph. D. from the College of William and Mary in 1992.

Dr. Newby-Alexander has co-authored several books including Black America Series: Portsmouth and her latest Remembering School Desegregation in Hampton Roads, Virginia in 2009. She also co-edited the book"Voices from within the Veil: African Americans and the Experience of Democracy" in 2008. Also, she created the interactive websites "Waterways to Freedom" (based on using Hampton Roads' waterways as part of Virginia's Underground Railroad Network) and "Race, Time, and Place" dedicated to African American history in Hampton Roads. She has won multiple honors including in 2005 when she was chosen by American Legacy magazine as one of the nation's top teachers in African American history at a Historically Black College or University.

Dr. Newby-Alexander serves as oral historian for the Supreme Court of Virginia, documenting the history of retired judges and lawyers in the 20th Century.
