Hampton University News September 21, 2018 Hampton University Alumni Trio Debuts Social Justice Short Film, 'Flipped,' at Newark International Film Festival Three Hampton University alums premiered their short film, "Flipped," at the Newark International Film Festival in Newark, NJ on Saturday, September 8, 2018. The film highlights social justices and serves duty to help others acknowledge current events within the world today. "Great job to these three motivated and creative Hampton University alums who collaborated together to create such an impactful film," said Hampton University President, Dr. William R. Harvey. "Social justice is an imperative topic that all people should be aware of, no matter your race or gender." Jack Manning III, ('02) who earned his B.A. in graphic design, served as the creative mind behind the film, inspired by current events, such as the murder of Trayvon Martin. Manning is a published photographer and videographer, who included film writer Tiffany Burgess ('01) in the project. Burgess earned her B.S. in biology from Hampton University. She is the author of a children's book and a contributor to "The Huffington Post." Once Burgess wrote the screenplay, the duo then enlisted filmmaker Lawrence "Law" Watford whose credits include "I Am Legend" and "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit." "Flipped" is about a standout high school student-athlete who is on a path towards success as he plans to become an engineer, until things one day go awry. He becomes overwhelmed by the injustices he faces in modern-day society and finds himself in a dire situation from which there is no escape. The three alums formed their production company, "Tyler Street Films," and began shooting in Atlanta in September 2016, completing the film in March 2018. The film was not only accepted into the Newark International Film Festival, but also August's IMBD Independent Short Awards, and the London International Motion Picture Awards in September. The three, who plan to expand the "Flipped" story in their next film, want audiences to leave with a willingness to discuss such an important topic. "Sometimes it is easier for people to understand another's point-of-view when you change the lens," Burgess said. "We want people to start having those difficult conversations about current events and social justice."
