Tuskegee University News May 9, 2014 Partnership penned with United States Army Corps of Engineers Tuskegee University will have more education and research opportunities with the United States Corps of Engineers thanks to a new agreement signed today. The university and Col. Donald Walker, commander of the South Atlantic Division, penned a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at supporting the production of more science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professionals. Tuskegee University Board of Trustees chairman, retired Maj. Gen. Charles E. Williams, said he believes the partnership is a step in the right direction to helping students and the global community. "Our board is very serious about the future of this institution. We know we can do much more for our country and the world," he said. Tuskegee University Acting President Dr. Matthew Jenkins also applauded the agreement. He also urged the faculty and researchers to think bigger when they pursue research and development opportunities. "We have to be very expansive, in our imagination, about where we want to go," Jenkins said. The agreement states: "The supportive relationship is established in recognition of the importance of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) to the future political and economic well-being of the nation. The importance of Tuskegee University to the business, industrial, and governmental institutions in this region as well as the overall USACE objective to attract a highly competent and diverse STEM workforce through the use of formal partnerships with Minority-Serving Institutions and/or Engineering Colleges and Universities." "We think the research and development we do with universities is important," said Lt. Gen. Thomas P. Bostick, 53rd U.S. Army Chief of Engineers and Commanding General of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, said. "Our focus in this area of diversity is a team effort." SANDRA M.
