MLK Convocation Honors Dillard Alumnae

Dillard alumnae Pearlie H. Elloie and Dr. Barbara Guillory Thompson were honored and celebrated with Lifetime Achievement Awards at the MLK Convocation on Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at Dillard University. Tulane President Dr. Scott Cowen presented Ms. Elloie with her award, along with the Reverend Wm. Wildes, President of Loyola University. Dr. Thompson was presented her award from Dillard President Dr. Walter Kimbrough and Xavier President, Dr. Norman Francis.
Earlier in the day, Dr. Thompson and Ms. Elloie shared their experiences in helping to desegregate Tulane University, at a luncheon with Dillard facutly, staff and students. Both alumnae praised Dillard for providing them with the tools to succeed and the support to go forward and broaden their education. Although they were part of a class action suit against Tulane, both women agreed they were "in the right place at the right time" when it came time to apply for graduate school at Tulane. Elloie became the first African-American to complete the two-year graduate program in social work at the Tulane University School of Social Work. Thompson completed the requirements for the Ph.D. degree by writing a dissertation on "The Black Family: A Case for Change and Survival in White America".
