Fort Valley State University News May 30, 2012 Davenport joins FVSU's external affairs family Effective May 7, the Fort Valley State University Office of External Affairs welcomed Courtney L. Davenport as the new associate vice president for external affairs and director for the Office of Sponsored Programs. Davenport will assist with the day-to-day management of external affairs and directly report to Dr. Melody Carter, vice president for external affairs and executive director of the FVSU Foundation, Inc. Before joining FVSU, Davenport served as principal consultant with Capitol Consulting Group. In that role, he worked with nonprofit and higher education clients in the areas of public relations, fundraising and organizational strategic planning. Most recently, Davenport was hired to work with Morris Brown College officials to complete a comprehensive campus-wide policy and procedural manual and Board of Trustees handbook in light of their reaccreditation efforts. An experienced administrator and successful fundraiser, Davenport has served in various advancement capacities at Huston-Tillotson University of Austin, Texas; Richmont Graduate University in Atlanta, Ga.; and the United Negro College Fund. In each of these roles, Davenport has maintained a personal portfolio in excess of $1 million. The Birmingham, Ala. native also served as vice president for institutional advancement and chief development officer at Voorhees College in Denmark, S.C., where he oversaw the college's development and communications operations, which included the offices of sponsored programs, Title III, the campus radio station and special projects. Davenport's accomplishments at the college include managing a $2 million fundraising portfolio and a sponsored programs budget portfolio of $7 million; leading the college's rebranding and image campaign; and securing $3 million from the U.S. Department of Energy to implement new degree majors in environmental science, emergency management and STEM outreach. While at Voorhees, the college saw a rise in alumni participation from 7% to 18% and faculty/staff participation rose to 85%. Davenport received Bachelor of Science degrees in psychology and biology from Georgia State University and an Executive Masters of Arts degree in philanthropic studies from the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University. Davenport studied at Miles Law School towards a Juris Doctorate degree and has completed post-graduate studies at Harvard, Vanderbilt and Carnegie universities in higher education leadership. While at Indiana, he completed the certificate in fundraising management and nonprofit leadership and is a certified fundraising executive. The administrator is an active member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Phi Delta Kappa International, Prince Hall Freemasonry, the Association of Fundraising Professionals and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.
