Alcorn hosts Law Enforcement Conference
Attorneys and officers from surrounding areas gathered at Alcorn State University to gain more knowledge about law enforcement.
Authorities from Claiborne, Copiah and Jefferson counties convened in the Dr. Clinton Bristow Jr. Dining Facility Gold Room Tuesday, June 7 for the 22nd Circuit Court District Attorney's Law Enforcement Conference. Some of the topics discussed were crime victim compensation, courtroom testimony, assisting agencies and open gun carry laws.
District Attorney for the 22nd District Alexander Martin applauded the authorities for their commitment to enhancing their skills and learning the new regulations.
"I'm appreciative to all of you for supporting this conference," said Martin. "I cannot overemphasize the importance of continuing to educate yourselves. We usually learn that things have changed from the time we embarked upon this career. Laws and procedures change every year, so it's so important to come together to keep up with current events and changes in the laws."
Alcorn Chief of Police Douglass Stewart thanked Martin for choosing Alcorn as the conference's destination and explained the importance of the training.
"It's very beneficial for our officers to receive this type of training on campus. I ask that you all look around and tell us if there's something that we can address. If you see us being productive, spread the word to others," said Stewart.
Alcorn President Dr. Alfred Rankins Jr., whose father is a retired police officer, expressed his appreciation for the police department's defense of the University and their counties.
"As a person who grew up in a law enforcement household, I appreciate what you guys do every day to keep us safe here at Alcorn State University and across the 22nd circuit court district," said Rankins.
