Alumni Plan a Day of Service

North Carolina Central University alumni will soon return to the "sloping hills and verdant green" for a day of service and celebration. On July 8, alumni will volunteer in various departments on campus from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The event is part of the National Convention and Centennial Celebration, sponsored by the NCCU Alumni Association, taking place July 8-10 at the Millennium Hotel in Durham.

"This is an opportunity for alumni to give back to the departments, programs and offices that helped them attain their Eagle wings," said Dr. Deborah Bailey, director of the Academic Community Service Learning Program. "We hope this will become a tradition at NCCU."

After completing their day of service on Thursday, alumni will participate in the university's birthday bash. The public is invited to an open session on Friday morning that includes a parade of chapter flags and installation of new officers. The NCCU cheerleaders will also perform.

Alumni will handle the business of setting next year's goals with regional meetings and several seminars on Friday, followed by a concert by jazz artists Kirk Whalum and Marcus Anderson at the Carolina Theatre. On Saturday, a black-tie fashion show and awards luncheon will round out the weekend. As an added bonus, registrants will enjoy commemorative Centennial Wine throughout the weekend. The wine was created by The Grove Winery and Vineyards in Gibsonville, N.C.

"It has been 15 years since our last convention," said Debra Taylor, convention chair and 1978 graduate. "We wanted alumni to come back to campus and celebrate the centennial."

The NCCU Alumni Association is committed to increasing support for the university by promoting a sense of pride and fostering a lifelong bond between NCCU graduates and the university. For more information on the convention and centennial celebration, visit http://www.nccualumni.org/centennial/
