A&T Junior Honored for Community Service Political science student Tylik McMillian is a believer of the Shirley Chisolm quote, "Service is the rent we pay for the privilege of living on this earth." So much so that he rises every morning with a specific goal in mind. "I am grateful for everything and I am entitled to nothing," he said. "Every day I wake up, it's my mission to help someone other than myself - it gives (me) a purpose." It's that purpose that earned the 21-year-old McMillian the North Carolina Campus Compact Community Impact Award for North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. The Lawrenceville, Virginia native currently serves as the attorney general in the Tate Administration of the Student Government Association and as a national youth leader for the National Action Network. He also serves as the chairman of the Black Caucus for the College Democrats of North Carolina and the director of outreach for the Brunswick County (Virginia) Democratic Committee. "My end goal is to be a U.S. Senator and if I'm blessed enough, if the opportunity comes, I would like to be the president," he said of his career aspirations. "I want to start locally as an elected official and work my way up to state and federal." McMillan is one of 23 students selected by their respective campuses for the 2017 honor, joining more than 250 college students recognized by the network since the award was first presented in 2006. He and his fellow awardees were honored at the Compact's annual Citizenship Service Networking and Partnerships (CSNAP) student conference in November at Winston-Salem State University. The event convened more than 230 students and staff from 28 campuses in the network. The conference included student-led workshops on diverse community engagement topics and featured remarks by local "change agents" representing different public service pathways. North Carolina Campus Compact is a statewide coalition of 37 public, private, and community colleges and universities that share a commitment to civic and community engagement. The network was founded in 2002 and is hosted by Elon University. North Carolina Campus Compact is an affiliate of the national Campus Compact organization, which claims 1,000 member schools representing nearly 2 million college students. SANDRA M.
