Albany State University to host Atlanta scholarship celebration

Prepare to "party with a purpose." Albany State University, along with the Tom Joyner Foundation, will host an all-inclusive affair, Saturday, March 26 at Atlanta's downtown Commerce Club to raise funds for need-based student scholarships.

Co-hosted by television actress and singer, JoMarie Payton, and Glenda Hatchett, Atlanta attorney and star of the former "Judge Hatchett" television show, the "Albany State University Renaissance: Party with a Purpose" is a benefit to celebrate giving to support need-based scholarships  and recognize Albany State University's designation as the November 2016 Tom Joyner School of the Month.

"Party with a Purpose" is the first of many university initiatives for the Tom Joyner School of the Month campaign. As the School of the Month, the TJF will promote raising funds for the university and highlight its programs for the entire year. ASU will be featured daily during the month of November.

"This much anticipated event creates scholarships for current and future Albany State students. I'm pleased and honored that celebrities such as Judge Glenda Hatchett and JoMarie Payton have committed their time and talent to this worthy effort. They, along with the Tom Joyner Foundation, believe in higher education, and understand how even $500 can determine if a student graduates or not," said Chanta Haywood, ASU vice president of Institutional Advancement and executive director of the ASU Foundation.

"On this special weekend, we want to celebrate giving so that students can achieve a higher education. That's why we are asking all who want to participate to simply make a monetary donation of their choosing to attend. No amount is too big or too small for our students," Haywood said.

Those donating $150 or more, will receive a photo opportunity with invited celebrities, special seating and an exclusive gift. All proceeds will go toward student scholarships.

The celebration, featuring lively entertainment, a silent and live auction of art by LeRoy Campbell and more begins at 4 p.m. and will last until 7 p.m. To donate, visit giveto.asurams.edu and select "Tom Joyner School of the Month" or visit tomjoynerfoundation.org.
