Honors College Week to kick off with presentation addressing one’s rights

The Honors College cohort of Coahoma Community College has set aside a week to host events geared at empowerment.

A.C.T. Aware – Tuesday, November 10, 2020

In light of social injustices that have resurged, the “A.C.T. Aware” videos will inform individuals of their rights. Set for Tuesday, November 10, 2020, this presentation details the proper procedure for police officers searching a home and legal rights on the job. Students will also be enlightened on lawful procedures to be followed when pulled over.

A.I.B.E. Conference | Wednesday November 11, 2020 – 9:30 a.m.

To positively influence males of Coahoma Community College and the general public, the A.I.B.E. (Aspire to Inspire Before you Expire) Male Empowerment Conference will feature community leaders. Topics to be covered include entrepreneurship, mental health, and adjusting to the new normal.

"We are going to discuss how people are responding to the COVID-19 pandemic: some are in survival mode; others are going through life trying to keep things normal," said Honors College director Jeremy Pittman. The discussion seeks to relay that the pandemic is uncertain and temporary yet will focus on factors in students' control.

“Young men, as well as the public, can get information on how to be agents of change in their communities and also expand their network of successful community-minded individuals,” said Pittman.

Guest speakers scheduled for the conference include Fly Zone CEO Kierre Rimmer, community activist Khalil Johnson, and founder of Fresh Start, Dreifus Smith. Registration to attend the Webex conference is free but required. This event will be held on Webex. Register to attend at https://cutt.ly/egUB0mB.

Black GPS of Excellence | Thursday, November 12, 2020 – 6 p.m.

Honors College Week activities will conclude with the “Black GPS of Excellence,” which will inform of the African American heroes of Black Wall Street in Tulsa, Oklahoma. During this event, a video presentation will give a concise historical overview of Black Wall Street. A panel including Higher Purpose Co. CEO Timothy Lampkin, mental health entrepreneur Monica Coleman, musician Peter Singh Jr., pastor and community activist Zedric Clayton, and Gardenia Hicks, an author, entrepreneur, and a pastor, is set to then discuss the successes, failures, and efforts of the industry leaders. Attendees will also gain insight from panelists on how they can create their own Black Wall Street.
