ASU's WVAS Wins Four Top Broadcasting Awards

For the ninth consecutive year, WVAS-FM, the Voice of Alabama State University, received top honors from the Alabama Broadcaster's Association.

Alabama State University's National Public Radio station, WVAS 90.7 FM, is becoming a lot like many of the collegiate football teams in the Deep South: winning is expected.

WVAS has won a total of 31 ABBY Awards since 2008 for its outstanding work in the radio broadcasting field.
And, this year was no disappointment.

On Saturday, March 25, during the annual Alabama Broadcaster's Association ceremony held in Birmingham, WVAS again set the "gold standard" with the radio station's staff taking home four important Alabama ABBY Awards for "Best in Broadcasting":

  • Melanie Hogan (veteran reporter), Best Medium Market Radio Reporter;
  • Marcus Hyles (senior correspondent), Best Medium Market Regularly Scheduled Newscast;
  • Renardo Smith (technician), Best Medium Market Public Service Ad for work performed on
    behalf of ASU's Violence Against Women Program;
  • Robb Taylor (WVAS host), Tina Joly (WVAS producer) and Melanie Hogan (WVAS reporter) were recognized for "90.7 Perspectives Show" (an interactive weekly talk show) that won Best Live Broadcast for a station-sponsored town hall community meeting, focusing on community/police relations..
