Harris-Stowe State University News November 14, 2014 Harris-Stowe Joins the HBCU-China Scholarship Network Harris-Stowe State University officially joined the China Education Association for International Exchange (CEAIE) and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Pilot Network October 16, 2014. The first group of HSSU students will participate in the scholarship exchange program in 2015. Spearheaded by Dr. Fatemeh Zakery, dean of the Anheuser-Busch School of Business, HSSU now joins eight other HBCUs in the Pilot Network. These institutions have united to launch student exchanges between the United States and China. The other participating HBCUs include Bowie State University, Hampton University, Howard University, Morehouse College, Morgan State University, Spelman College, Tougaloo College and Xavier University of Louisiana. As part of President Dr. Dwaun Warmack's ongoing commitment to achieving academic excellence, the program is designed for HSSU students to explore cultural diversity and gain first-hand international educational experiences. During the duration of the scholarship program slated to expire in 2017, the Chinese government will issue 1,000 scholarships to students at the participating HBCUs. Awarded funds will cover tuition, room and board. Participating students will have the opportunity to study abroad for a period of four weeks up to two years. In addition to the cultural, educational and exchange opportunities, students will participate in activities that will promote mutual understanding and good will. "The HBCU-China partnership is an excellent opportunity for Harris-Stowe students to study abroad and become more global citizens," stated Dr. Dwyane Smith, vice president for Academic Affairs. Participating in the CEAIE is another step in HSSU achieving its mission to provide educational and collaborative partnerships and outreach programs with other educational institutions. Furthermore, offering educational experiences that emphasize excellence in all areas and promote the development of effective communication skills, interpersonal growth, critical thinking, workplace readiness and an understanding of and appreciation for diversity. Founded in 1981, the China Education Association for International Exchange (CEAIE) promotes Chinese educational development and enhancing understanding and friendship between Chinese and international educational communities through cooperation and exchange. Harris-Stowe State University, located in midtown St. Louis, is a fully accredited four-year institution that offers 14 degree programs in the areas of teacher education, business and arts & sciences. In 2013, HSSU ranked No. 1 in the state in degree production of African-Americans in mathematics (Missouri Department of Higher Education).
