Tuskegee University News August 29, 2011 University president and comptroller participate in NATO organization meeting BRUSSELS, Belgium (August 29, 2011) - Tuskegee University President Gilbert L. Rochon and Glenn Dickerson, comptroller and associate vice president for fiscal affairs, attended a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Science for Peace and Security Programme meeting at NATO headquarters on Aug. 23-25. The nature of the meeting was to plan the implementation of the grant received by Tuskegee University, in collaboration with Bogazici University in Istanbul, Turkey, for "Remote Sensing for Early Warning and Mitigation of Disasters," including storms, flooding, forest fires and epidemics, through monitoring infectious disease vector habitat. During Tuskegee's summer commencement on Aug. 16, Rochon referred to the grant that will establish two ground stations for receiving real-time data from earth observing satellites at partnering universities, Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane, Morocco, and Abdelmalek Essaadi University in Tangier, Morocco, as well as a training center for disaster management, geographic information system (GIS) development and image analysis for remotely sensed data. According to its website, "The Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Programme is a policy tool that enhances cooperation and dialogue between NATO and its partners. It is based on security-related civil science and technology. ...It also aims to promote regional cooperation through scientific projects and activities." SANDRA M.
