West Virginia State University Day of Giving Challenge Raises more than $480,000

West Virginia State University (WVSU) received donations of more than $480,000 on Wednesday, March 17, during its Day of Giving Challenge, the single largest one day fundraising total ever in the university's history.

The Day of Giving Challenge saw hundreds of individual donors give to support the university's scholarships, academic programs and athletic teams.

"We truly appreciate all of the support West Virginia State University received during our Day of Giving Challenge and the generous investments our donors made to support our students and programs," said Patricia Schumann, vice president for university advancement and president of the WVSU Foundation. "These donations will make a difference in the lives of our students and for that we are forever grateful."

Throughout the day on Wednesday, university communications students served as reporters doing live interviews with students and faculty from each of the four colleges and athletics about what donors' financial support means to students and programs.

These reports were broadcast via Facebook Live on the university's Facebook channel, www.facebook.com/wvstateufile:///C:/Users/Schumann/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Windows/INetCache/Content.Outlook/YJCILZXO/www.facebook.com/wvstateu and are archived there now.

The Day of Giving Challenge was hosted on the university's Founders Day. Authorized by the U.S. Congress as a land-grant institution under the Second Morrill Act of 1890, the West Virginia Legislature established WVSU, on March 17, 1891, to provide education to African American citizens.
