KSU To Host Open House For The Rosenwald Center For Families and Children

Kentucky State University will host an open house prior to the opening of the new Rosenwald Center for Families and Children. The event will take place Feb. 19 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The entire community is invited to tour the center and learn about what it has to offer.

With an anticipated official opening in early spring, the Rosenwald Center is accepting children ages 6 weeks to 12 years. Parents can register their children at the open house.

The university's new child development center will be a one-of-a-kind facility in the state, according to the director April Trent: "The Rosenwald Center for Families and Children will be unmatched by anything in the state, including the classrooms and the playground."

The 15,180-square-foot center is the only facility in Kentucky with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification. Among other features, LEED-certified buildings are designed to conserve energy and provide a healthier and safer environment for its occupants. KSU's facility includes six classrooms, an administrative office, a multipurpose room/kitchen and playground. Computers and iPads are also features in each classroom.

The Rosenwald Center is developing a quality program to meet state and national accreditation requirements. The program revolves around a holistic approach that includes both parents and children, who will be taught by teachers with at least a bachelor's degree and teacher assistants with at least an associate degree. In addition, the center's director has extensive experience in the child development field as an owner of a preschool, Head Start regional director and director of a child development center.

The curriculum will include discussions of practical life strategies with families of young children, including topics such as nutrition, healthy living and budgeting. Nutrition will also be a feature of the center's everyday activities. Since the Rosenwald Center is a program in the College of Agriculture, Food Science and Sustainable Systems, it will have access to fruits and vegetables fresh from farm to table. Healthy breakfasts and lunches will be prepared by an onsite cook.

The Rosenwald Center for Families and Children also will offer afterschool and summer programs. For more information, call April Trent at (502) 597-6882.
