President Wayne A. I. Frederick to Receive Edward Bouchet Legacy Award

President Wayne A. I. Frederick, M.D., MBA, champion of excellence in higher education, service and Howard alumnus, will receive the Edward Bouchet Legacy Award and provide keynote remarks at the Howard University Graduate School's tenth annual Bouchet Forum on Thursday, September 17, 2015. The event will take place in the Louis Stokes Heath Sciences Library.

As a triple alumnus, Dr. Frederick's dedication to Howard University spans more than two decades, beginning with his enrollment as a 16-year-old student. Born in Port of Spain, Trinidad, he was admitted to Howard University with the dream of becoming a physician. His passion to serve and to heal was fueled by his personal experience with sickle cell anemia, a hereditary disease he has lived with since birth. Dr. Frederick's leadership is underscored by a renewed commitment to academic excellence and access to an affordable education. An example of this commitment is the Office for Undergraduate Studies, created to ensure that students have a successful academic experience consisting of curricular and co-curricular activities.

The Edward Bouchet Society was established by Howard University and Yale University in 2005 to recognize outstanding achievement and promote diversity and excellence in doctoral education and the professoriate.  The Bouchet Society will recognize President Frederick's invaluable contributions to education access and opportunity as the recipient of the 2015 Bouchet Legacy Award.

The national initiative includes nine, additional institutional partners: Cornell University, George Washington University, Rutgers University, University of California, San Diego, University of California, Los Angeles, University of Michigan, University of Wisconsin Madison, and Washington University in St. Louis and The Chicago School of Professional Psychology.

The Bouchet Forum provides an important platform to comment on educational contributions in the U.S. The Edward Bouchet Legacy Award recognizes esteemed educators and advocates whose steadfast commitment and dedicated leadership to cultivating a new generation of scholars upholds Dr. Bouchet's groundbreaking contributions to the academy.
