Cheyney's Jasmine Hurt Interning in Harrisburg for PA Department of Labor & Industry

Cheyney University of Pennsylvaniahttp://www.cheyney.edu/'s Jasmine Hurt of Harrisburg, PA is working for the state Department of Labor and Industry as part of a 15-week internship sponsored by Pennsylvania's State System of Higher Education.

The 20-year-old junior criminal justice major at Cheyney is one of 12 students participating in The Harrisburg Internship Semester (THIS)http://www.passhe.edu/inside/asa/Opportunities/this/Pages/about.aspx program, which provides students the opportunity to work in all areas of state government while earning a full semester's worth of credits. THIS invites students from each of the 14 State System universities to participate.

Hurt, a Cheyney Keystone Honors Academy (KHA) http://www.cheyney.edu/keystone/index.cfm Scholar, and the other students participating in THIS will attend several academic seminars during their fall semester internship. Each of the students will complete an individualized research project as part of the program's requirements.

"The THIS program is a great networking opportunity. I think that all students should take advantage of this opportunity that is offered," Hurt shared.

Hurt is living at home this semester and commuting to work each day. Being a Harrisburg native is certainly convenient for that, as well as what she did over the summer (interning for eight weeks at State Representative Patty Kim's office). She credits Dr. Tara Kent, Associate Provost and Dean of the KHA, for encouraging her to spread her wings.

"I think that one of the benefits of being a KHA student is all of the great opportunities and events that Dr. Kent puts together for the students for them to become the best that they can be."

Last academic year, Cheyney KHA Scholars Andria Mebane, Raven Davishttp://www.cheyney.edu/news/Cheyney-Students-Spend-Semester-in-Harrisburg-PA-Internship-Program.cfm?grp_id=5690, and Stephanie Bermuda-Cruzhttp://www.cheyney.edu/news/Cheyney-Students-Spend-Semester-in-Harrisburg-PA-Internship-Program.cfm?grp_id=5690 each spent a semester in Harrisburg as THIS interns and learned a great deal.

More than 600 students from the State System universities have participated in THIS since the program began in 1989, each gaining valuable insight into the workings of state government at the policy-making level. Interns have worked with dozens of state agencies, as well as in the offices of the governor, the speaker of the House of Representatives and the attorney general.

Cheyney students who'd like to know more about THIS should contact Dr. Lynn Green, Sociology Professor and Cheyney's THIS Coordinator since Fall 2012, at lynngreen@cheyney.edujavascript:void(location.href='mailto:'+String.fromCharCode(108,121,110,110,103,114,101,101,110,64,99,104,101,121,110,101,121,46,101,100,117)+'?') or 610-399-2295.

Pennsylvania's State System of Higher Education is the largest provider of higher education in the Commonwealth, with more than 100,000 degree-seeking students and thousands more who are enrolled in certificate and other career-development programs. Collectively, the 14 universities that comprise the State System offer more than 2,300 degree and certificate programs in more than 530 academic areas. Nearly 520,000 State System university alumni live in Pennsylvania.
