Diverse Education June 22, 2015 Tuskegee University Secures $500K Grant Tuskegee University has been awarded a $500,000 grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to bolster its Bachelor of Arts degree program. The funds will be used to add more faculty and equipment for the newest majors, which include music and visual arts. "The proposed programs will blend musical and artistic training with an increased emphasis on liberal arts classes so that Tuskegee can train students ... to achieve higher levels of artistry as well as interpretive capabilities," the grant proposal states. "The arts teach students about expressing creativity, critical analysis, and diversity," said Tuskegee President Brian Johnson. "As an inherently interdisciplinary area of study, Bachelor of Arts degrees in Music and Visual Arts fit well into the mission of Tuskegee University to graduate global-minded citizens who are truly prepared to apply their talents to create, understand, and evaluate art in its various modes."
