SC State's Master of Arts in Teaching Program Student Receives Scholarship for Published Work

Takiah Corbett, a second year graduate student in the Master of Arts in Teaching Program at SC State University, recently received the Department of English and Modern Languages' Parler-Belcher-Sharp Scholarship for her written paper entitled, "Is English We Speaking: An Exploratory Study of Trinidadian and Creole Dialect." "Participating in the language and culture project has been an enriching learning experience. It has given me the opportunity to fine tune my research skills and has given me the opportunity to learn about a culture different from my own. I am truly grateful for the experience and look forward to any opportunity to extend the project in the future," said Corbett.

The paper was published as part of an edited collection by Dr. S. B. Salone, associate professor of Linguistics at SC State, in which she highlights research on South Carolina language varieties, creoles and dialects. "I am very pleased with Takiah's work documenting languages spoken in the state of South Carolina. She exemplifies excellence in all of her academic pursuits," stated Salone. "She has distinguished herself in her commitment to the project and the spirit of self-motivation that she has shown in being the first graduate student in our Master of Arts in Teaching Program to complete this project."

Faculty members in the Department of English and Modern Languages are excited to be able to study and document valuable language and cultural materials representing the state of South Carolina.
