NCCU Receives $100,000 from Wells Fargo Foundation
North Carolina Central University received a $100,000 grant from the Wells Fargo Foundation to establish the Wells Fargo Student Advancement Fund at NCCU. The gift provides funding to support scholarships and other forms of financial assistance at various stages of students' academic careers including freshman admission, sophomore retention, internship support and graduation expenses. Two thirds of students who fail to graduate from historically black colleges or universities cite financial need as their principal reason for dropping out.
"I express my profound gratitude to Wells Fargo for recognizing that the decision to persist or discontinue university study can sometimes turn on the need for small, yet unattainable sums of money," said NCCU Interim Chancellor Charles Becton. "Wells Fargo Foundation's generous grant of $100,000 will enable us to respond to funding requests that are critical to the academic careers of our students."
"Wells Fargo has a strong focus on supporting education and we are proud to support this scholarship fund," said John Messick, Durham market president for Wells Fargo. "We know that the students of today are tomorrow's future leaders. They'll comprise our workforce and help define our economy. A college education helps ensure students receive the necessary skills and knowledge needed for success, both in business and life."
NCCU's Office of Scholarships and Student Aid will administer the grant.
