North Carolina Central University News March 2018 NCCU Fashion Competition Brings Hip-Hop to the Runway North Carolina Central University<http://www.nccu.edu/>'s Apparel Design program will present its annual fashion show and competition on March 24 with a musical theme and the largest slate of participants in recent memory. More than 30 young designers will debut their creations with music provided by DJ Lowkey. "The theme for this year is 106 & Fashion," said Darlene Eberhardt-Burke, associate professor of Human Sciences and an instructor in the campus textile lab. "We have a large group of students participating, so it it should be an exciting competition." The theme refers to the television series 106 & Park, which ran on BET from 2000 until 2014. The popular countdown show featured current hits from the hip-hop and R&B charts. For the competition, each contestant will bring his or her own style into play through creation of four individual outfits. The students have spent weeks developing their own designs, recruiting models, cutting patterns and fabric, and adding final touches before the big night. "People usually don't bring much style to the workplace, so my goal is to design apparel that is both professional and stylish," said NCCU junior Jordyn Weaver, a textiles and apparel major. Student designer Joshua Brunson said for him the show will be a culmination of a lifelong fascination with couture. "I've always been interested in creative arts," Brunson said. "My inspiration for this comes from my mother, sister, aunt and cousins. My goal is to create things that relate to each other, so you can mix and mtch." The event will begin at 7 p.m. in the McDougald-McLendon Arena on campus. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. General admission tickets are $6 in advance and $8 at the door. VIP tickets are also available for $25, which includes reserved seating and a reception prior to the show. SANDRA M.
