HU Welcomes HUD Deputy Secretary for High School Leadership Summit
The William R. Harvey Leadership Institute will welcome U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Deputy Secretary Maurice Jones to speak at the 2012 High School Student Leadership Summit on Nov. 16-18 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in downtown Hampton.
High school seniors are invited to attend the summit, which will focus on "The Leader Within."
Jones was appointed to the office in March 2012. In his role as the second most senior official at HUD, Jones manages day-to-day operations, the annual operating budget and 8,900 agency employees.
During this year's summit students will attend workshops presented by Leadership Institute students and staff designed to develop a sense of self-awareness and leadership styles. Workshop topics will include: adopting to change in leadership, adjusting to adversity, leadership efficiency, and constructing a strategic plan for leadership.
On Friday, conference goers will hear from Lieutenant Colonel Anthony M. Perkins, commander of the 439th Communications Squadron at Westover Air Reserve Base. In his role as commander, Perkins leads 115 personnel and is the first line of defense on all classified and unclassified network challenges for a 5,500 person joint community.
Brian Albritton, a 2008 HU and William R. Harvey Leadership Institute graduate, will also address students during the conference. Albritton currently serves as area sales manager at Groupon Getaways with Expedia.
Registration for the summit is $260 and includes two-night accommodations at the Crowne Plaza, meals and all workshop material and training. The deadline for registration is Nov. 1.
