Clark Atlanta University News February 12, 2018 Silvanus J. Udoka, Ph.D., Named Dean of Clark Atlanta University's School of Business Administration Clark Atlanta University (CAU) President Ronald A. Johnson today announced the selection of Silvanus J. Udoka, Ph.D., as dean of the University's School of Business Administration, effective June 1. Udoka currently serves as professor and chair of the Department of Management, and holds a joint appointment in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, at North Carolina A&T University (NCA&T). He will report to CAU's Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Peter O. Nwosu, Ph.D. "Throughout the course of our national search, Dr. Udoka's background and experience rendered him the exceptional candidate to advance the University's vision for our School of Business Administration, one rooted in innovation and entrepreneurship," Johnson notes. "His mastery of the principles and ethical practice of management, combined with his expertise in systems engineering and technology, aligns directly with the University's, focus on IDEAS the Matter: innovation and entrepreneurship, design and systems thinking, environmental sustainability, the arts and humanities and the sciences and technology. With him on board," Johnson adds, "I am confident that we will create significant momentum in our quest to establish CAU as a major global pipeline for intellectual, research, innovative and entrepreneurial talent." "The history of the institution and the storied reputation of the School of Business Administration is palpable and the opportunities to create a transformative, innovative learning environment-attributes that first compelled me to pursue this assignment-align with my own mission to produce business and industry leaders who will not only compete successfully within the contemporary business environment, but apply critical thought, analysis and creativity to develop new market paradigms across vast sectors of the global economy. We are going to do great and exciting new things at Clark Atlanta." Under Udoka's leadership at NCA&T, the Department of Management, one of the university's largest academic department, has grown from 377 students in 2011 to 614 undergraduate students in fall 2017, with 25 tenured and tenure-track faculty. His work to innovate and expand the capacity of the learning environment is as impressive as his recruitment and retention successes. With his leadership, the university established its first business graduate program, the Master of Science in Management, which is now the institution's MBA program. He also was a leading force in establishing the university's doctoral program in industrial engineering, for which he led the effort in developing what is now the concentration in manufacturing and service enterprise engineering. In addition to successfully guiding his department's 2016 Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) continuous peer review, Udoka, a certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, led the development of his department's 2017-2022 strategic plan, emphasizing connections between innovation and technology in the development of curricular and co-curricular programming. Udoka also will bring to CAU his successful experience with the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology Inc. The author of more than 90 scholarly articles, refereed journal entries, book chapters, case studies and conference presentations, Udoka serves as a technical reviewer for the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the National Science Foundation. In the past decade, he has generated more than $3.5 million in grant-funded research underwritten by organizations including the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Lockheed Martin. The new dean earned the Bachelor of Science degree in manufacturing engineering technology from Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. He earned the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in industrial engineering and management from Oklahoma State University. He is a board member of the Global Opportunities Center in Greensboro, N.C., and the Healthy Communities Working Group of the Piedmont Triad Sustainable Communities Regional Planning Project. He also is a member of APICS, the leading provider of supply chain management research, education and certification, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, the Institute of Industrial Engineers and the American Society of Engineering Education. He is a member of four honor societies: Beta Gamma Sigma (an international honor society serving business programs accredited by AACSB International), Alpha Pi Mu (industrial engineering), Tau Beta Pi (representing the entire engineering profession) and Phi Kappa Phi (the nation's oldest, most selective honor society for all academic disciplines).
