Urban planning conference is April 16

The Master of Science in Urban Studies and Planning program at Savannah State University (SSU) will host its annual urban planning conference from 8:30 a.m.- 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, 2014, in the new Student Union. The theme of the conference, which is supported by the Adler Family Foundation Inc., is "Resilience Planning for Historic and Vulnerable Communities."

The conference will provide participants with a comprehensive description of how historic and vulnerable communities can become resilient communities that are better prepared to recover from disasters and disruptions in a sustainable way while maintaining a decent quality of life for all. The three tracks include historic buildings and collections, community resilience and resilience planning.

Planners, emergency management experts, public administrators, college professors and preservationists will present lectures at the conference, which will be divided into four sessions. The morning sessions will focus on identifying potential disaster impacts on historic building and collections, the resiliency of SSU historic buildings, history of resilient communities, heritage preservation, demographics of vulnerability to disasters and resiliency for services. Lecture topics during the afternoon sessions include preservation and recovery of buildings in Savannah's historic district, campus preparedness, building a culture of preparedness, reinvestment and restoration, resilience planning at the neighborhood level and climate resiliency for coastal communities.

The plenary session, which begins at 9 a.m., will include two award presentations: the Urban Planning Award for Structural Resilience and the Urban Planning Award for Community Resilience.

The conference is free and open to the public, but pre-registration is required. For a full conference schedule, list of presenters and online registration, visit http://www.savannahstate.edu/misc/urban-planning-conference/
