New Wiley College program makes history
We often marvel about Marshall's good fortune in having its opportunities for institutions of higher learning.
We have Wiley College, East Texas Baptist University, Texas State Technical College. And we can't forget Panola College, which has a center in Marshall, too.
Each of these campuses serves a unique segment of our community and, indeed, a populace that stretches far beyond the borders of Harrison County.
And now we have reason to crow with pride yet again.
Wiley College announced an agreement with Texas Southern University that will allow Wiley to offer TSU's master's of administration of justice program at Wiley.
This is a big deal and Wiley now becomes the only college in our area to offer a post-graduate degree plan. The fact it is partnering with TSU to offer the program does not lessen it, but enhances it. Such a partnership could be only the beginning of what could develop into more offerings for students.
Higher education is changing and our local institutions are quickly adjusting to meet the needs of today's students. Wiley's latest announcement is perfect proof of this.
The program - in the criminal justice area - is also an excellent field in which the college can expand. We predict that those who successfully complete this degree will be able to find good careers.
We're proud of Wiley, not just because of its storied past, but because of the promise of the future it holds. This is good for the college and it is even better for our community.
