Shaw University receives $150,000 grant from The Cannon Foundation
Shaw University continues its EPIC work to attract the best and brightest scholars and provide state-of-the-art facilities for its existing student population. A $150,000 grant from The Cannon Foundation will help Shaw continue to make improvements to student residence halls.
National research indicates that living on campus contributes to greater overall satisfaction with and success in college. The grant awarded to Shaw University will fund renovations to the Talbert O. Shaw Living-Learning Center, one of the university's flagship residential facilities.
"I would like to thank The Cannon Foundation for this generous philanthropic investment," said Shaw University president, Dr. Tashni Ann Dubroy.  "It is always our mission to provide our current and prospective students with the very best environment conducive to learning and productivity.  We work hard to provide each student with a superior university experience," said Dubroy.
The Talbert O. Shaw Living-Learning Center consists of a five-story women's residence hall and a three-story men's residence hall.  Built in 1992 and bearing the name of the university's 12th president, the facility has the capacity to house up to 500 students.  Over the years since its construction, some of the building's original infrastructure, such as heating, cooling and plumbing systems became outdated and required upgrades and replacements.  Campus maintenance workers have also had to work to control and eradicate mold and other environmental hazards caused by humid air conditions and negative air pressure that occur with changing weather conditions.
The grant awarded by the Cannon Foundation will be leveraged with federal funds for the purchase of new HVAC equipment in both towers that will improve air quality system efficiency, reduce energy costs, and provide more comfortable living quarters for students.
"At the end of the day, these improvements are about enhancing the qualities of life for our current students and offering a compelling case to students who are considering Shaw University to pursue their college degree," said Dr. Dubroy.
The first phase of renovations on the Talbert O. Shaw Living-Learning Center are expected to begin in mid-Summer, 2016.
Since 1943 The Cannon Foundation has had a philanthropic footprint across the State of North Carolina through its support of public and private institutions of higher education.
