Excellence and Opportunity on Display During UNC President Visit

Margaret Spellings, the new president of the University of North Carolina system, visited Winston-Salem State University on April 26 to learn more about the university and its strategic vision.

Spellings' visit was part of her 100-day listening tour, which includes visits to all 16 UNC universities, the NC School of Science and Mathematics, the NC Research Campus in Annapolis, and UNC Health Care. The statewide tour offers a chance for Spellings to learn about the University and her new home state. Her visit to WSSU included a tour of campus, as well as listening sessions with students, faculty, staff, campus leadership, members of the WSSU Board of Trustees, and community leaders.

During her visit, Spellings also had an opportunity to hear about WSSU's new strategic plan and how the university works to prepare graduates for successful careers in tomorrow's jobs. Her tour of campus included stops at the Center for Design Innovation, Bowman Gray Stadium, the university's simulated hospital, and the Community Development Center, as well as an opportunity to hear about student research projects and view student work in the university's Diggs Gallery. The university's acclaimed marching band, The Red Sea of Sound, offered her a glimpse into one of WSSU's trademark experiences.

"We were delighted to welcome President Spellings to campus and to have the opportunity to share the university's strategic vision for the future with her," said WSSU Chancellor Elwood L. Robinson. "I'm confident that she left campus with an understanding of what makes WSSU unique and valuable to not only the state, but to the region and beyond."
