Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation Awards Claflin University $82,000 for Scholarship
Claflin University is pleased to announce that the Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation has awarded the institution an $82,000 grant for general scholarships during the 2011-2012 academic year.
President Dr. Henry N. Tisdale noted that the Whitehead Foundation has supported the University's efforts to educate young women of vision since 1994, the same year Tisdale began his tenure as Claflin's eighth president.
"Because of the generous contributions by the Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation over the years, countless students have benefited from a world class education at Claflin University," Tisdale said. "The Foundation has awarded the University its largest grant yet in the upcoming academic year. This is evidence of a fruitful collaboration which serves to educate the next generation of visionary leaders."
Last year, the Whitehead Foundation provided a $78,000 grant for academic scholarships.
The Whitehead Foundation provides grants for need-based scholarships to deserving Christian women who are residents of nine Southeastern states. The Atlanta, Georgia based foundation was established in 1946.
Vice President for Institutional Advancement Rev. Whittaker V. Middleton said grants like these allow the University to realize the goals of its new strategic plan, which is entitled "Envisioning Greatness".
"We are embarking on a historic journey here at Claflin University toward 'Envisioning Greatness'," Middleton said. "Because of organizations like the Whitehead Foundation, we are swiftly turning that vision into a reality."
